In that time he made 14 consecutive successful defenses and defeated a record 23 opponents. His record stands at 69 fights with 64 wins and 5 losses including 53 KOs.
Puerto Rican boxer Wilfred Benitez turned pro at 15 and two years later at 17 years old he defeated 30-year-old Light Welterweight champion Antonio Cervantes after a 15-round split decision. He went on to defend the title successfully three times before changing to welterweight and in 1979 claimed the WBC title. Next he moved up to Super Welterweight and he became the youngest three-weight world champion at age 22.
